KidREACH provides free one on one academic mentoring to students who face academic challenges and whose families are unable to provide the support they need. Students meet with their mentors each week on Tuesday afternoon.
KidREACH serves Newport Heights and Woodridge Elementary Schools. Students recommended by teachers or other staff are invited to apply.
Eligibility for the program:
The student is struggling in one or more academic areas
The family cannot provide all the necessary help
The family would find it difficult to pay for tutoring services
Once a child is accepted into the program, s/he is paired with a mentor. All mentors are screened through a background check and must provide two references.
More information is available on the Missions bulletin board, or by contacting Joann Wilson.

KidREACH students and their families shared a meal prepared by Janet Gardner and a team of helpers on November 10. Pastor Brad Bergfalk was on hand to offer prayer and extend a heartfelt welcome on behalf of the church. The dinner provided a significant opportunity for tutors to get to know the parents and siblings of the children with which they work. One family brought aunts, uncles and cousins as well! After dinner each tutor and student pair taught their family a game that they enjoyed playing at KidREACH. Another dinner is scheduled for March 2010, celebrating the children's various cultures with food brought by their families.
Tutor Interviews
Joann Wilson, KidREACH Site Coordinator, recently asked Ryan and Mary Lu about their tutoring experiences. Ryan Ponten, a Newport High School senior, is a KidREACH tutor for Steven from Woodridge Elementary School. In addition to tutoring, Ryan leads a recreation time for the children along with Kyle Karpack, another Newport teen. Mary Lu Sanburn is a retired member of Newport Covenant who works with Noemi.
Ryan, what is your favorite part of KidREACH?
My favorite part of KidREACH is the look in a kid's eye when they suddenly understand a new concept. The "I-got-it!" moment is always extremely rewarding.
What do you find challenging about KidREACH?
KidREACH challenges my energy level. Thankfully, the kids have so much energy to feed off of, and it's always a joy to run around with them in the gym, even when I feel tired.
Mary Lu,what is your favorite part of KidREACH?
The best part of KidREACH is the interaction with my student.
What do you find challenging about KidREACH? The most challenging part is finding how to stimulate my student's interest in learning.
What is most rewarding about being involved with KidREACH? When a light dawns and the student knows how to do the math problem ... or the smile I see when she can read the story is the most reward aspect. I appreciate Joann's work bringing this program to Newport Covenant!
