Visioning Letter to the Congregation

August 3, 2010
Dear Family and Friends of Newport Covenant Church,
It has been about a month since the Elder Board at NCC asked me to serve as the Interim Lead Pastor of our church. Meghan and I have been thankful for your encouragement and prayers through this transition. I think it is very natural that there are many questions about the direction of our church, the process of developing a renewed future for our church, the relationship that has with a more permanent leadership position, and how (and when) that will be decided. The Elder Board and staff are eager to be both transparent and receptive with you as we are seeing the beginnings of a very encouraging and hopeful new season for Newport.
On August 8, we will be starting a 4 week sermon series through the book of Nehemiah titled: What is it You Want? The purpose for this series is to pull together the Veritas and visioning work that we had started during the summer to prepare us to form a new, 3 year vision of what we believe God is calling us to become as a church. Here is a timeline that lays out the process:
- A Veritas conference was held to help us speak truthfully about our church.
- A Veritas (now Vitality) team was created to help us form a new way that we covenant to be in relationship with each other as we move forward.
- An Interim Lead Pastor position was created to: Provide for an environment of stability, transparency, continuity and trust for the Newport congregation so that we may continue making disciples through our various ministries, as we seek, build unity on and begin to implement God's vision for our future.
- Explore the book of Nehemiah during the sermon series, What is it you want?, to pull together the work of Vitality and initial visioning to create unity and expectation for our future, and to commission the leadership team that will draw together this vision. August 8-29.
- The Vision Team conducts a retreat to draw together a narrative description of what we see God is calling us to become in the next three years. September 18.
- The initial steps of an implementation plan are drawn up to begin our first steps toward living into God's 3 year vision for our church. October 3.
- A Pastor Search Committee is formed to determine what kind of leadership is needed in a new Senior Pastor to help us achieve and grow beyond this 3 year vision. October.
There have certainly been many challenges to our church, and we are learning on a weekly basis new ways to ask for forgiveness and find reconciliation. There is a new spirit of unity, anticipation and hopefulness in our staff, Elder Board, and congregation. The Elder Board is also very encouraged and wants to express our appreciation for your continued faithfulness in your financial support of our ministry.
I am honored to be included in this catalytic time of Newport's future. We depend on your prayers and for God's faithfulness.
Rev. Adam Anderson, Interim Lead Pastor
